Support Cleanup of LANL Waste and Focus on WIPP
Quick action. Real impact.
On April 23, the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) issued a WIPP draft permit modification to speed up cleanup of Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) and focus WIPP on disposal of legacy waste.
We support this action and urge comments by June 8.

Here are some of the provisions of the Draft Permit that we must support
- From January 1, 2027 through December 31, 2031, at least 55% of the total volume of all waste must be LANL legacy waste.
- Beginning January 1, 2032, at least 75% must be LANL legacy waste.
- Legacy waste at LANL Material Disposal Area-G must be shipped by July 1, 2028.
- If requirements are not met, all non-LANL shipments stop until corrected.

I support NMED’s permit modifications to prioritize cleanup of LANL legacy waste and ensure timely disposal at WIPP.
